It is with the greatest pleasure I introduce to you…

THE GROW AND GATHER FALL COLLECTION

I poured so much love into choosing these items for your home and hope you can feel the coziness and warmth throughout the entire collection. I focused on details like natural textures, muted & moody colors, warm metals, and the softest fabrics. Decor that will look just as good year round as it does during this beautiful season.

This year has been chaotic and hard to say the least, and I find myself craving more and more simplicity and comfort in our home. I know so many of you can relate to that same feeling of needing your home to feel like a safe, serene retreat from the outside world, and as we start to prepare for colder weather and the holidays in the not-so-distant future, I wanted to curate a collection of beautiful things to do just that.

ITEMS SHOWN ABOVE:

husker red foxglove stem bundle | off-white velvet pumpkin | brown pleated pillar candle
antique gold metal tray | beige sweater pumpkin | cable knit pumpkin
cotton & polyester woven blanket | glass match holder | seagrass tray
rotating wood pedestal tray | black/cream embroidery lumbar pillow

Thanks to your incredible support of our little shop and my big dreams over the years, we’ve been able to grow our inventory of Grow + Gather decor, and I think you’re going to love everything we now have available.

My Advice:

ITEMS SHOWN ABOVE:

brown velvet pumpkins | brown eucalyptus bundle

And remember that fall doesn’t have to mean orange pumpkins (unless you want it to!) and candy corn (eww). Think of pieces that add a hint of seasonal warmth, but won’t feel out of place as soon as a holiday/season passes.

ITEMS SHOWN ABOVE:

cream loop stitch pumpkin | brass/glass scallop edge decorative box | brown resin pear

ITEMS SHOWN ABOVE:

husker red foxglove stem bundle | off-white velvet pumpkin | brown pleated pillar candle
antique gold metal tray | beige sweater pumpkin | cable knit pumpkin
cotton & polyester woven blanket | glass match holder | seagrass tray

A few weeks ago I revealed the new color we painted the living room – yes it is still white, but it’s actually a very different white that fits the age of our 1940’s home much better! After we got a fresh coat of paint on the walls and trim, it was time to do a little decorating.

The first thing on my list was a large piece of canvas art to fill the wall space above our leather sofa. I explained here why I decided to take down the top part of our board and batten trim that prevented me from hanging anything on the wall without a large gap. Now I can hang the art flush against the wall, which sounds like such a small detail, but it really makes such a difference in the overall look.

With such a large space to fill, my next challenge was to find an affordable way to get a large scale piece of art that I didn’t have to completely diy. There are many ways you could go about this, but I wanted to find a solution that was high quality, efficient, and within my budget.

In this post, I’ll go over exactly how I created this beautiful landscape canvas art, including where you can find really affordable (even free!) art and ways you can print, frame, or create a canvas!

Large Scale Art on a Budget

There are thousands of resources out there for buying beautiful, affordable artwork and even some that are considered public domain – a.k.a. free for you to use. Any piece of creative work that is not protected by copyright law is considered “public domain”. This means that no individual creator or artist owns the piece, and it is free for anyone to use.

Here are a few places to look for public domain art for your home:

There are thousands and in some cases millions of pieces of free art on the websites above, which can be overwhelming to say the least. This is why I typically utilize shops that do all the hard work of narrowing down the options for you. Even though there is a small fee attached to the artwork purchased through these shops, I feel like it is well worth the price to have a curated collection of options to choose from in a matter of minutes rather than spending hours or even days paging through way too many choices and getting frustrated.

Here are a few shops I like to buy from digital art from:

Large Scale Art on a Budget

Once you purchase a piece of digital art, you are able to have it printed and framed or turned into a canvas.

Here are a few places to print digital art:

Here are a few places you can have a canvas created:

I went with Canvas Discount for this one in our living room, and you can see below how affordable it was for such a massive canvas – $98 shipping included for a 3 ft x 4 ft canvas.

tip: Most of these places almost always have some kind of sale or discount code available, so take that into consideration when shopping around for prices. For example, the canvas I bought says it originally would have been $409 before tax, and I only paid $98 total.

One last tip:

When it comes time to replace your old TV, I highly recommend considering investing in a Frame TV so you can display digital art prints like these instead of a big black blank screen. They sell the prettiest frames to go around the TV so it legitimately looks like a beautiful piece of art hung on the wall!

Earlier this summer I took you along as I shopped at one of my favorite affordable home stores, At Home. I bought a few bigger items that gave our outdoor spaces an instant upgrade – a 2-tier double bowl concrete fountain for the deck and a pair of concrete lion statues for my front porch

This month I wanted to take a trip to a more high end home store I’ve actually never been to, Pottery Barn. I’ve bought a few things online before and browse their website often, but I will be 100% honest with you, as I always am – most things I find are way out of my budget.

P.S. this is not in any way a sponsored post. Just sharing my genuine opinion, favorite finds, and shopping experience with you!

I thought it would be fun to go see things in person, check out the quality, and take a look at what worth the splurge vs. what I would probably avoid. I found some things that were surprisingly a decent price and a few things that were absolutely insane, like this $2,000 mirror and this $5,000 chandlier. I also knew they would most likely already have some of their fall decor out and wanted to go see the super cute cloth pumpkins they have every year!

Just like the last shopping trip, I took pictures of all the furniture and decor pieces I wanted to show you, so at the end of this post, I’m sharing a curated collection of my favorite Pottery Barn finds that you can buy right now in-store or online.

– I’ll be sharing videos of my shopping trip on Instagram, so make sure you’re following there!

Let’s go shopping!

POTTERY BARN FURNITURE:

I spent a good amount of time just browsing each section, checking prices on lamps and pottery and testing out furniture. The beds were big and comfortable, the sofas were made with really nice, durable fabric, and the arm chairs were perfect for snuggling up and sinking into. I found one chair that ironically was called Remmy (same as my little French bulldog), and it was this beautiful extra wide moss green swivel chair that I tried so hard to envision a spot for in my home. If I had enough space in my living room, I would have purchased one or two immediately.

POTTERY BARN VASES & VESSELS:

The common qualities you’ll see in pretty much all of the Pottery Barn lines are: natural, organic shapes and textures, muted colors, and high quality materials.

I’ve wanted to purchase some of their larger vases and pottery for years, but I usually get cold feet when I look at the price tag online. I was surprised when shopping in person though that yes, the pottery is expensive, but… it a) is very heavy and well crafted, which is perfect when you have large, heavy branches or stems you want to display and b) when you can actually see the size of the vase or pot in person vs. just seeing a photo online, it’s much easier to justify the price.

For example, if I was shopping the Pottery Barn website and wanted this terracotta vase in the photo below, I would see that it’s on the smaller end of the ones they have displayed in photos and assume it’s a “small” vase for almost $80. Even though it gives the dimensions, it’s hard to imagine what 14.5″ tall really looks like unless you see it in person. And what if the coloring doesn’t look the same as it does on the website?

When I spotted this vase in the store, it was the perfect shape with tons of texture and a beautiful neutral, weathered finish. It’s a great size for displaying the big branches I love – any bigger, and I honestly don’t really know where I would have room for it. So $79 felt like a good price compared to other stores for this quality and size of vase. Another benefit of shopping in store: you don’t have to pay for shipping or worry about things breaking in transit.

POTTERY BARN CANDLES:

Another decor category I really loved at Pottery Barn was their candle selection. They have several different style vessels, and these heirloom matte candles were stunning. The recycled glass pumpkin lid candles were so pretty for fall!

But we spent a ton of time sniffing all the signature scent candles, and I ended up buying their popular Ocean Jasmine scent. Every candle in the signature line is so fresh and light. Have you ever smelled a candle that is so strong it almost smells chemically? These have such a clean, natural fragrance, and while they aren’t the cheapest, they also aren’t the most expensive I’ve seen. I also really liked the Pacific Grove and Fern Grove scents, and I believe all the signature scents are available as reed diffusers and potpourri as well.

POTTERY BARN LIGHTING:

One thing I do wish was more affordable is Pottery Barn’s lamps and lighting. There are some STUNNING large lamps like this Faris ceramic lamp and Plymouth ceramic lamp, but I just can’t bring myself to spend that much for a lamp. Hopefully someone at Pottery Barn is listening. 😉

POTTERY BARN PILLOWS:

I did however pick up two of these pieced suede throw pillow covers for the living room. You can buy just the cover or the cover and an insert, but I personally prefer to buy my own insert because a) you can get it cheaper somewhere else and b) I like to pick the size and amount of stuffing in my pillows.

I’ve ordered Pottery Barn pillows online before when I can catch a sale, and the seasonal designs are always so pretty. You can almost pair any combination of pillows together and get a beautiful look for your bed or sofa, which is really nice if you have a hard time putting patterns and color palettes together.

Shop with Me at Pottery Barn

CONCLUSION:

Overall, the majority of the store was above what I wanted to spend, but there are definitely reasonable pieces if you look hard enough and even better when you shop a sale. I would shop here again for:

  • cozy throw blankets
  • seasonal decor
  • candles
  • side/accent tables
  • bedding
  • curtains
  • vases, vessels, bowls, trays
  • and maybe seating if you’re ready to invest in quality pieces that will last a long time

I’ve been putting off this project for far too long, and it feels so good to finally have a fresh coat of paint on every bit of our main living area. Since the last time we painted our living/dining/entryway (which all flow together into one continuous space), the baseboard trim has taken a beating from dogs, vacuums, furniture, etc. And my constant desire to re-decorate has added quite a few screw holes in our plaster walls that I got tired looking at.

I picked out a new paint color – yes, still white. 😂 But believe it or not, this is actually a very different white! It’s softer and more creamy without appearing the slightest bit yellow, and although I was extremely nervous to fully commit to a new paint color for the majority of the house, I’m very, very happy with what I chose.

I took some photos of this beautiful new view in our living room to show off the paint color in real life, and below I’m going to outline all the details of this project:

  • the specific paint color
  • what paint sheen I went with
  • what I used on the trim
  • the special primer I purchased
  • and why I primed a room going from white to white!

Best White Paint Colors

MY NEW FAVORITE WHITE PAINT COLOR

Let’s start with the paint color, since I know that’s what you’re probably here for! I had several white paint colors in mind that I thought would work well for our home, and after looking at a lot of inspiration online, I decided to go with White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

No, I did not sample it first before committing, nor did I try any other colors – both of which I recommend if you’re painting such a large main part of your house!

But my gut just knew that of all the ones I really liked, White Dove would be the best fit for what I envisioned. It’s a soft, neutral white that keeps the rooms feeling bright and airy, but has just enough depth and creaminess not to feel stark or cold. And now comparing it to the color we previously had – Du Jour by Valspar– this new White Dove color feels like it fits the age of our 1940’s home so much better.

I did look at another very popular color, Swiss Coffee, but I knew the green and yellow undertones I wouldn’t love on our walls. White Dove does have a slight yellow undertone, which gives it that creamy appearance, but it also has much more gray, which balances the warmth out beautifully.

Best White Paint Colors

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TRIM?

I really wrestled with the decision of what color to paint the trim. Our previous Du Jour color was so close to a pure white that it just made sense to paint the walls and trim the same color.

My initial instinct was to keep the trim a bright, pure white, which would be a slight contrast from the walls. But I love the look of interiors that have all the walls, trim, even doors painted the same color, and I thought trying that look would be a pretty safe bet since it’s just a white we’re working with.

The result = so so good

Because our ceilings aren’t very high, keeping the same color from the baseboards all the way up to the ceiling gives the illusion of added height. I did, however, make one small change in the paint formula from the walls to the door/window casings and baseboard trim…

Can you guess what it is?

Best White Paint Colors

Answer = the paint sheen.

I painted the same color on both the walls and trim, but in two different sheens – flat and satin.

White Dove is a Benjamin Moore color, but I went to Lowe’s and asked them to mix that color formula in a paint base that they carry simply for convenience. I went with:

Walls: Sherwin Williams Infinity in Flat

  • This is a paint and primer in one that is supposed to fully cover in just one coat. It pains me to buy the more expensive cans of paint, but for a project like this where I had SO much surface area to cover, I would pay just about any price to only have to do ONE coat. Highly, highly suggest spending the extra money on a higher quality paint in situations like this.

Trim: Sherwin Williams Interior/Exterior Door and Trim in Satin

  • This is an acrylic urethane enamel that gives the performance of an oil-based paint with the ease of soap and water clean-up. Goes on really smooth with no visible brush marks, and should stand up to years of scuffs and scratches.

HOW TO SMOOTH THE APPEARANCE OF TEXTURED WALLS

We have textured plaster walls, and since we added board and batten trim almost 7 or 8 years ago, it’s always bothered me that you can see a very obvious difference between the smooth board and batten and the texture of the walls.

I did two things differently this time painting this space:

  1. I used a flat finish on the walls.
    • This is not a common recommendation to use because it’s the least durable finish and typically doesn’t stand up very well to scrubbing if it needs to be cleaned. However, it IS the best paint sheen for hiding imperfections and creating a more uniform surface because it has a very velvety, matte look that does not reflect light.
  2. I primed everything first with a high build primer.
    • A high build primer is used to fill and smooth surface irregularities such as uneven drywall in new construction, scratches, sanding grooves, nicks, pinholes, etc. Starting with a high build primer allows for a more uniform paint finish and hides imperfections, which is exactly what I needed to mask the varying wall texture and years of remodeling and piecing trim work together.

Best White Paint Colors

WHY PRIME WALLS GOING FROM WHITE TO WHITE?

This was one of the most common questions I got while documenting this project on Instagram, and you’re right – it makes no sense to prime when the paint color is almost staying the same.

The reason I primed wasn’t to hide a previous color, but to help hide the texture and imperfections. One great example of this is all the screw and wall anchor holes I had to fill and paint over. No matter how well you sand and smooth the spackle, it still has some variances in texture and porosity. We did one good coat of this high build primer on everything (walls, baseboards, window/door casings, board and batten), and I cannot recommend this “method” enough.

Are the walls perfectly smooth with zero texture? No, but they do look 100x better! The only way to truly eliminate the texture we have would be to skim coat all the walls, which would be a massive, messy undertaking with how large this space is and working around the board and batten. I was hoping to avoid skim coating at all costs and so very grateful I tried a high build primer!

Best White Paint Colors

I still have a few small projects and some styling to do before I’m ready to photograph the entire space, but I wanted to give you this pretty, little view in the meantime. Don’t worry, more details on that massive piece of art and the lighting coming soon. 😊
